Berluti and ....

t seems that Silvano Lattanzi can be found at Barney's on Wilshire Blvd on Beverly Hills: www.silvanolattanzi.com p

And they are have a boutique in NYC on Madison as well:  www.silvanolattanzi.com p

Silvano Lattanzi shoes are supposed to be hand made so you'd expect to fork out quite a bit for them. He's (Silvano Lattanzi) known for his Norwegian or Bentivegna constructed shoes. His designs are quite sublime but too bad he's got a less than spectacular website.

I love Berluti shoes for their colours but I've been hearing about theirs being overpriced for their quality. This is of course very subjective. As you probably already are aware of, Berluti are Blake constructed; i.e. the shoe's upper is folded underneath itself and sewn directly into the sole of the shoe, and hence many say that Blake shoes are more delicate and do not hold up well.  The more common adopted method used by US and British shoemakers is the Goodyear construct. Goodyear welts are done by sewing the upper into a ridge of leather, and then attached to the sole and is comparatively more sturdy and more "weather-proof".

Blake construction allows the sole to be extremely close cut, making the shoes sleeker. How delicate Berluti shoes are is a subject of debate among owners. In my opinion, it's a decision between style and substance and we all know that style wouldn't stand the test of time and I wouldn't worry too much about passing my Berluti to my kids or something. As with watches, we fall in love and we fall out of love. My advice is, get what sings to you now.

Which Berluti line do you like? I like tatoue and demesure.

And since you like Berluti and just to make things a little harder for you, you might also want to check out Corthay. www.corthay.fr /

Check out the Oedipe Line, models Bucy (green!) Cocteau etc.

Pierre Corthay was trained at John Lobb (2 years) and Berluti (5 years). He was the Chef d' Atelier at Berluti before leaving to set up his own company. Like Silvano Lattanzi, he is not too savy at marketing. Again, I came across his shoes in Tokyo. Not sure if Corthay are found in CA but I think they are in NY.

Hope this helps and have fun shopping. smile

Warm regards,

iAn

Thanks again Gaz for the post! The last pic of the 'weird hides' is awesome! Out of curiosity does the off-center lacing style a design element or are there advantages of making it that way? -MW
