There are many artisans and professions needed in making watches and especially decorated watches. Whilst Piaget has maintained about 40 types of specialists in their integrated Manufacture, they still rely on independent artists for the rare arts.
Recently, we featured the rare arts of cloisonné, miniature painting, precious thread embroidery, micro-mosaic enamel and lapidary. Many of these are done by independent artists. After they finish Piaget work, they can also accept other commissions. For example, there were only two miniature enamel paintings of the Piaget Rose dial. As 'piece uniques', they would have taken weeks to complete but not sufficient to sustain an annual income for the artist! She does work for the Other famous watch brand in Geneva too. 
Of course, as a Jeweler of Watchmakers, Piaget has the lapidary skills, in-house, for their own use viz. carved pink quartz roses but the stone dials are likely by independent specialists, who need to make more dials per annum to survive.
