Dear forumners,
It may have escaped your notice because the new PIAGET Altiplano 38mm manual-winding watch is too thin to see at certain angles
Seriously, the official press release can be read by CLICKING the following URL link:
It is not with the usual HYPE that I proudly state that Piaget has redefined the face of horology - today.
They truly have taken mechanical ultra-thin to the highest plane (Altiplano) and have crushed the competition with this world's thinnest mechanical watch.
No ifs...No buts...No caveats....No games...Just the winner!
There has been some discussion on PuristSPro about the thinnest watch over the last few months and we have had arguments about whether the thinnest movement inside a thick case can still be considered a extra flat title holder. There were discussions about what difference it would make if a display caseback was changed to a solid caseback. We have also discussed if reliability would suffer with thin-ness because warping or pressure on the watchglass would press on the hands or pinion.
Forget all that:
Piaget has combined the movement, case and dial into an integrated structure to achieve the new world record.
For the last few months, I swore not to join the discussions about thin watches because I could not reveal the new champion. Unfortunately, those who got jubilee and even other Piaget thin watches (myself included) now have a new target of desire.
There is no separate specification for height of movement and height of case. The thin-ness of the movement is the thin-ness of the case. It is literally, "thinking outside the case".
The whole watch is 3.65mm ultra-thin.
Piaget did it by moving the springs, escapement, gears and dial all to the same horizontal plane by re-arranging the going train in an arc around the "dial". The hands and escapement were moved BELOW the bridges so they are protected from any external deformation of the watchglass.
We will be allowed to show more after SIHH 2014 but really, there is nothing more to say:
Its the worlds thinnest mechanical watch.
Its 38mm diameter.
Its a Piaget.
Its 'Invictus'.
Its made my Piaget Altiplano with 9P movement simply obsolete...grr...grr.
PuristS are pre-ordering theirs already, as I write this.....
Regards,
MTF
