Piaget: Fun story and a question...

Dec 26, 2014,13:17 PM

Hi all,

Before the year ends I would like to share a story related to Piaget.
Several years ago I saw this small leather box for sale with the name Piaget on it.

I thought to myself, cool – if I ever get a Piaget watch it is nice to have some goodies with the watch.
The auction when down and I got the box for a bag of chips…
As it happened, the seller lived just around the corner from me. So instead of him shipping the box I went over to his place to pick it up in person.

When I knocked on the door there were a small elderly gentleman opening and asked me in. Once I was inside I thought I had stepped into some cookie museum!

From floor to ceiling were 18 century tin cookie boxes! Big, small, square, round…. You name it; the man must have had several hundreds of them.

I started to ask about his collection and he told me he been collecting 18 century British tin cookie boxes for over thirty years!
When I told him I like watches he showed me one box shaped as a clock tower, with a working clock inside!
smile

I was stunned! Talk about dedication, the man barely had room to sit at his kitchen table because of all the boxes…

Long story short, when I handed him his money and was about to leave the man asked me
-“What is that thing?”- “What do you do with it?”
I opened the box and looked inside. High quality leather and some brass instrument…

I looked at him and said -“I haven’t the slightest idea, but I want it!”
The gentleman looked at me; nodded understanding and we said our good bye.
smile
So, now to my question: What is this “thing”? Looks like some sort of compasses or a watchmaker tool….? Or is it just some really old “give away” from Piaget that has nothing to do with watches?

Like key chains and note books the brands hands out nowadays…?
I still have no Piaget in my collection, but I still have the "thing" in my possession.

Best
Blomman

It would be great if he let you take a few pictures to share with us about his collection. On the Piaget piece looks like a tool to measure distances on a map. Bill

Sorry, no...

He is/was very private about his boxes... Yes, I think you are right about the "tool". Best Blomman

I use this tool while navigating all the time.

On his privacy I am sure he will share a little once he gets to know the gentleman that you are and the crazy collector that you are also. You will be a mirror into his soul. Bill

Do you know the name of the tool?

You use the tool by measuring a distance on a navigation chart then using the latitude scale measure the distance in nautical miles or latitude minutes. Bill ...

Divider, thank you! :) [nt]
