One small step for Piaget; Only Watch 09 for Auction

Jul 07, 2009,11:58 AM

Its that time of the year again – Piaget is supporting the Only Watch charity auction for the 3rd consecutive time. Under the patronage of HSH Prince Albert II, this exceptional event is held biennially during the Monaco Yacht Show. All the proceeds help to support research on Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy – a progressive muscle disase, which results in fatal respiratory and cardiac complications in children.

For the 2009 auction, Piaget is offering a timepiece commemorating the 40th anniversary of Man’s first step on the moon in 1969: a Piaget Emperador coussin large moon.

The standard 2009 watch by Piaget is cute enough but I think this auction piece unique is a nice interpretation of the moon-phase complication. A large moon indicator at 6 o’clock position is seen within a 12 mm diameter aperture. The moon is crafted from a gold disc, heated to bubbling point and then cooled down so as to create an irregular-textured and unique appearance that evokes moon craters.

For the eagle-eyed out there, the moon-phase disc is engraved with Piaget’s interpretation of a footprint left by Neil Armstrong after the first step on the moon.

This unique Piaget Emperador coussin large moon is equipped with the new Calibre 860P, a self-winding movement designed, developed and produced by the Manufacture de Haute Horlogerie Piaget. Only 6.15 mm thin, this movement guarantees a 72-hour power reserve. The back of the 18-carat pink gold case is engraved with the inscription “Only Watch 2009” and fitted with a sapphire crystal exhibition window that reveals the exquisite movement finishing featuring circular Côtes de Genève motifs, a circular-grained mainplate, bevelled bridges and blued screws.

In the months up to the auction at the Monaco Yacht Show on September 24th; we can sneak a peek at the Piaget Emperador coussin large moon and the other 19 watches in various locations around the world:

Shanghai (Park Hyatt):  29 – 31 July
Geneva (Patrizzi & Co):  27 – 29 August
London (Asprey):  03 – 05 September
New York (Tourneau):  10 – 12 September
Milan (Pisa Orologeria):  17 – 18 September
Monaco (Monaco Yacht Show):  23 – 24 September

What do you think?  Footprint or No Footprint?

Regards,

MTF

My preference is without footprint

The footprint is a little distracting and only looks fine when the entire footprint is visible. Otherwise it'll look like an imperfection on the moonphase IMO. - AT

Ony One......

Anthony, As there is only one watch with the footprint on the lunar surface display, Piaget has made it a good imprint. I wonder if they used a jeweller's miniature boot to do it whilst the gold was bubbling molten? As I like the standard watch anyway, if...

Footprint...with a modification on the marketing slant

Instead of the Neil Armstrong story at least make it appropriate for the event: a fundraiser for muscular dystrophy. They could have said the footprint represents the high hope that a cure can be found and young boys burdened with Duchenne muscular dystro...

I blame Omega.....

mike, Omega is making a brouhaha with their posse of ex-Nasa astronauts and moon-walkers being carted around the world to celebrate the historic 1969 Moon Landing. I guess that as Piaget introduced the big moon display watch this year, it seemed a good id...

Absolutely brilliant!

I like your idea very much! It certainly makes the watch more memorable and much more appropriate for the event! Matthew

Well, IMO I think the non-footprint is cleaner...

...but the watch is for such a good cause, how can I fault them? Even the bejeweled skull B&R gets a pass from my potential comments on their design choices, as the watch has been created in service of a higher purpose. I wonder if any PuristS have pu...

Footprint or rather Bootprint

It is a 40th Anniversary of that significant history. The "footprint" is a must on the moon phase. Aesthetics is secondary to me. Regards Ling

I think its cute....

Some of us remember 1969 and the One small step for a man............ For that generation, the bootprint on the lunar surface is a must! Regards, MTF

Without... without any doubt !

Fr.Xavier...

Good thing that you like the clean moon....

because winning the auction piece may be a little bit difficult Even without the bootprint, this is the most "realistic" cratered moonphase display. Regards, MTF

Footprint...Two Thumbs Up

I think the foot print adds that hint of spice, making this XL Coussin's moon phase appear that much more unique...not to mention accurate. =)

With Footprint

I did win this watch and it looks really nice with the footprint. It is an extremely elegant watch and the footprint is clearly visible but does not jump out. It's quite unique....

Congratulations on your foot step!
