WOW, JLC's prices are just flat out scaring me away.

Was on the website looking at the new Polaris and came across the 300 meter Memovox diving watch, $20,600 USD. I'll keep my Submariner and call it good. Even the stainless steel Master Ultra Thin with date is creeping up on $10,000. Maybe it is a case of ...

Ouch! But let's say an FPJ Elegante is around $15K.

 By: patrick_y : August 31st, 2023-19:44
Shouldn't the JLC be right around half of the FPJ Elegante? So in an analysis with the market, it's not too far off. But if you ask me it's all gone crazy. I still think the Submariner at $10K USD plus tax is too much.

I think $10,000 is steep for a Submariner too, I got mine long before they hit the $10k mark.

As we all know, a $25 watch tells us the time too, it just may not bring the same satisfaction as the multi thousands of dollar watches do. However to some it might.

Really depends...

Some people only buy things because they're expensive. I've got a friend who buys beautiful things but has no true understanding of why Patek Philippe is considered a top brand. Sure, he'll tell you that they're complex, take a lot of labor-hours and time...

A little defense for JLC...

 By: patrick_y : August 31st, 2023-19:42
JLC has had relatively modest price increases for the many years prior to this though. Price adjustments are largely based on consumer demand. In prior years, consumption and production were equal, thus JLC couldn't raise prices. But in more recent years,...

I hadn't considered this before.

 By: andrea~ : August 31st, 2023-21:12
I only criticize this move because I love the brand. It does feel alienating to customers when such a price hike occurs, but I can understand your point. They still make really good watches and the new polaris looks great.

I wholeheartedly agree!

 By: patrick_y : August 31st, 2023-21:45
Overall, I feel JLC's price increases are way to steep on some models. But also looking back, their price increases have been much smaller than the rest of the industry the past several years due to the brand's popularity. It's also highly possible that J...

The point about India is clever.

 By: andrea~ : August 31st, 2023-22:54
We will probably see a big rise in the popularity of watches among indians, exactly what happened with China. I hope JLC will be able to improve its product line in order to really take advantage of this new market.

Reversos could be quite popular in India

…given the origin story of the design

Yup! There is definitely that possibility!

JLC is sitting on a potential gold mine!

India will probably progress slower than China...

 By: patrick_y : September 1st, 2023-06:21
India will almost definitely progress slower than China. China grew so fast because of its one-party system. India has several political parties in power. Today, China's "middle class or higher" (by Western standards) population is around 300 million peop...

Unfortunately overpopulation is a huge problem among those countries

That's why renewable energy should be the top priority. We need better solar cells and, hopefully, nuclear fusion.

Or the milked cow... ;)

Inflation (at least in the US) is waaaaay higher than what we are told imho...

 By: mdg : August 31st, 2023-17:09
...there are just too many ways to cook the books to make it seem better than it is. So maybe it's 'greed,' or maybe manufacturers are getting hit with really high costs and have no choice but to pass it along to the consumer.

Pricing Analysis

 By: Koozy : August 31st, 2023-18:07
Whilst I agree that the price increases make adding any further JLCs unappealing to me, I assume that they must do a huge amount of analysis on price elasticity of demand such that they must forecast a net benefit to revenues and income. Nonetheless, stra...

There's always that argument. JLC has no doubt done a price vs. volume analysis. But the analysis is still a projection and companies do make mistakes.

 By: vitalsigns : August 31st, 2023-18:55
Maybe this is JLC's Icarus moment. Time will tell. It would be a terrible result for JLC to have to change price direction.

In one sense, I find it offensive: same product, no real improvements, yet massively higher price.

 By: vitalsigns : August 31st, 2023-18:51
On the other hand, I just laugh. There is zero chance I'll be buying any JLCs at these prices, even though I am a fan of the brand, own a few JLCs (and my wife does too). I haven't bought a new JLC in >5 years. We're not priced out of the market per se, b...

A potential customer

 By: Weems@8 : August 31st, 2023-19:53
I could be a potential customer. Yes, JLC prices are too high for me. As i watch their line up, there are some models that i like, but i am missing the factor that can tear me over the line. The factor that hugs me is modernism, sporty flair, water and di...

I don't want to overstate the case, but JLC seems to have stagnated compared to their renaissance...

in the later 90s and early 2000s. Many exciting offerings, designs and risks (and relative value). Not so much these days.

Exactly.

 By: blau : September 1st, 2023-12:01
Their offerings these days are so much less exciting and innovative than they were when I first became interested in JLC. The complaint isn't merely that prices are rising: it's that their offerings are stagnating *while* the prices rise. Like you, it isn...

Watch journey

My watch journey in a glance. Watches and brands, you can discover them all when the journey starts. Internet, shops, advertorials, meet people with watches on wrists, etc. JLC came up rare. I heard of the brand. Mostly Rolex that is called, showed, and i...

With making it all better, costs can rise. Personal salary upgrade? What i do not understand is why it is excepted when PP increase prices, and when a tru horologist like JLC do it, complains come. JLC test their watches 1000 hours before they go on sale,...

The free market at work!

 By: Henke : September 1st, 2023-02:42
If it's now $3000 more expensive to buy a Rolex, then that gives JLC $3000 worth of room to move market before the same buyer will consider a Rolex over a JLC again. Nothing to do with the actual quality of the product, or how much it costs to make.
